New Images of Identity
The Armory is presenting recent explorations of racial identity in work by multicultural artists as part of the SKIN/Art & Ideas Festival. A growing number of artists of color have more than one cultural heritage, either ancestors from different parts of the world or even forbears who were Caucasian. As a result, their self-expression through art has become more complex. The images explore the idea of race from more than one culture, using not only personal experiences, but also the connections to larger social and political issues to investigate their diverse ethnic backgrounds. The artists included in the exhibition are Layla Ali, Iona Rozeal Brown, Enrique Chagoya, Dihn Q. Le, Yoshua Okon, Lezley Saar, John Trevino, and Kara Walker.

”Incognegro”
"Incognegro" includes multimedia photographs, paintings, and sculptures that appropriate and represent historic minstrel images and critiques race issues that are apparent through blackface performance. The show features 14 new works by Greenfield made over the past four years that have not been previously exhibited in Los Angeles that flirt with the line between racism and political correctness. The exhibition includes lenticular prints juxtaposing minstrel portraits, paintings featuring iconic accoutrements from vintage minstrel "how to" guides, photo portraits of contemporary blackface performers, and a series of motorized outdoor sculptures that literally inflate the artist's distinctive forms of provocation. Mark Steven Greenfield studied at Otis Art Institute, received his B.A. from California State University, Long Beach and his MFA from California State University, Los Angeles. From 1993 to 2002, he was the Director and Curator of the Watts Towers Arts Center. He led the 1998 U.S. delegation to the World Cup Cultural Festival and was a 2002 Getty Visiting Scholar. Mark continues to have an active life as a visual artist, exhibiting throughout the United States and abroad.
Currently, he teaches drawing, design, and art history at Los Angeles City College and is Director of the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery for the Department of Cultural Affairs.
