Sample Sri Lankan food, watch the Sri Lanka Day Parade at 4pm filled with ethnic dancers, drummers, masked performers, a theatre elephant and flag bearers paying homage to their mainland’s annual ancient “Esala Perahera” parade that has major religious and cultural significance. Out of spiritual and sacred duty, all performers and elephants in the indigenous parade pledge to various Hindu kovils, Buddhist temples and individuals via volunteerism. Religiously, the event’s importance is because it’s dedicated to Buddha’s sacred tooth relic that is in custody of the “Temple of the Tooth” in the city of Kandy for the ruler of Sri Lanka and ensures the divine right to rule the land. The “Esala Perahera” parade is the only time when the sacred tooth relic is taken out of the temple. It is then carried in a casket on top of an elephant.
