Cape Verdean singer/songwriter/guitarist Manuel Lopes Andrade, AKA Tcheka, is the pioneer of that West African island’s batuque rhythm. His unique narrative songs tell of Cape Verde’s people, heritage and atmosphere… Enjoy all of tis outdoor at the fabulous Skirball Center’s patio. Free

SIZZLING SUMMER NIGHTS ’08 @ THE AUTRY FEATURING FRANCISCO AGUABELLA & HIS LATIN JAZZ ENSEMBLE
See another side of Griffith Park at the Autry National Center’s weekly live music and dance party featuring sounds of mambo, son, Latin jazz, charanga, and Afro-Cuba. There will be complimentary dance lessons by Trish Connery and even a separate dance floor for kids. The café and taco bar open at 6pm and they serve the best margaritas in Griffith Park, while there are extended museum hours so you can peruse the exhibit.

SUMMER SCREENING MIXERS @ BARKER BLOCK
Enjoy free (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) drinks and flicks in downtown L.A.’s Arts District Barker Block’s courtyard. This outdoor sneak preview of the Downtown Film Festival’s film selection is a chance to picnic or just chillout on the lawn. Chairs will also be provided. Tonight’s film is the mockumentary/Rock Musical“Your Name Here” (2008/83 mins./USA) written and directed by Tamara Halpern. It’s the coming-of-age story of 2 teens who want to start a band and all the crazy adults who get involved. The original music was written and performed by the teens. This is a great family flick!

THE SKIRBALL CENTER PRESENTS BALANDUGU KAN
West African drum and dance troupe Balandugu Kan—which means "the sound of the village of Balandugu," in Guinea— tells stories and songs in the powerful Guinean style known as Djembe. The group relates ancient traditional African tales to modern society.

GETTY CENTER SUMMER SESSIONS ’08 presents UNSHAKEABLE GROOVE
Take a trip to the musical heart of Africa. The 11-piece Budos Band encompass bass, guitar, electro organ, trumpets, baritone, saxophone, bongos, congas, tambourine, guiro, clave and shekere. They explore funk, Afro-beat, and soul music. Joining them are our local group Fool's Gold – where Africa meets Cali with Hebrew lyrics and funky dancing. DJ Jeremy Sole’s Musaics blends Afro-beat, cumbia, Highlife, jazz, dub, and experimental beats. He’s the co-founder and resident DJ of Afro Funké, Zanzibar’s weekly Thursday party. As there there weren’t enough performers, add the Filipino Aurelito and Jam-rock-born Shakespeare AKA I&I Sound. From a 1969 ice cream truck with turntables, amps, and speakers called "Destiny," they blast their positive dub message.

HAMMER MUSEUM presents SCREENINGS OF LESS THAN ZERO & THE BIG LEBOWSKI

LACMA presents ORCHESTRA CHARANGOA
Charanga means a band that plays popular, festive music en Español. The premier charanga orchestra performed in the early 20th century under the direction of Antonio María Romeu.
